Our Biodiversity Team got the opportunity to shed light on the Importance of Animal Welfare and the ever-delaying enactment of the Animal Welfare Bill. Aluth Pola is a non-profit market organized by Justice for Animals, along with Ceylon Wild Safari, hosted by Body Bar. The funds are for their Animal Welfare Program where they go to the outskirts of Colombo with a veterinarian to vaccinate, sterilize dogs from low-income communities. 

The Animal Welfare BIll which was passed last year, is yet to be Enacted (Legislative Act) and to this day the fine for killing an animal inhumanely is only Rs. 100 or no more than 3 months in jail. The current law that prevents cruelty to animals was introduced in 1907, and last updated in 1955. It may have been a suitable punishment 116 years ago, however it is 2023 and times have changed, therefore it is imminent to advocate for the Enactment of the Newly Proposed and Passed Bill without further delay, as it was first drafted in 2006. 

It is time to push for the enactment in Sri Lanka because everyday Animals are subjected to cruel methods of treatment, neglect and violence and the punishment has little to no consequence leading to more threat towards domestic and farm animals. 

There are multiple benefits of tending to the welfare of Animals, not just for the animal itself but for humans as well. Human-Animal Bond can be beneficial for our Mental Health, Physical Health and helps enhance our Community.
